Three

Based on a brief requiring a letterpress design using the number three, the poster shows three-em quad and thick spaces releative to point size. Each point size being multiples of three found in the letterpress: 6, 9, 12, 18, 24, 30, 36, 42, 48, 60 and 72.

When a line of type is composed, metal spaces must be inserted between the words, these are shorter than the type and have no character on them. In this case letterpress spaces are raised up using card and metal to heighten them to the printing level (they would normally be passed over). By doing so the internal mechanisms of the letterpress are exposed.

The poster was selected for 'The Changing Face of the Letterpress' exhibition at the London College of Communication, 5-11 March 2009.
